DIAMONDS ARE A GIRLS BEST FRIEND

This 30 ft. screen made with 30,000 manufactured diamonds (detail on top) is one of the most excessive uses of gems that I have ever witnessed... and  I love this piece.  Damien Hirst exhibition at the Gagosian Gallery (uptown) has finally gotten to ME!  Although his work for me has been mostly "shock and awe" triggers, with this conceptual piece I can identify!  Included in the exhibition are some photorealistic paintings of famous gems such as (The Premiere Rose)

I am not going to mention the other piece that is difficult for me to comprehend in this post.  BUT...

Had the intention of very special day attending the small exhibition (30 works)  at the Guggenheim Museum's Collection of Non-Objective Modern Art, for a causal afternoon viewing.  To my amazement, shock and awe, I was confronted by a completely "empty" Guggenheim.  Bare walls and very few people mulling around on the ramps.  Looked kinda' strange to me, however, I knew that it was between exhibitions.  Took the elevator to Tower 5, enjoyed viewing the paintings, walked to Tower 7  (noticed some curator types merandering around)  finished up with the Brancusi wood sculptures.  Wandering onto the ramp I noticed Tino Sehgal and was introduced by a project director I had veen talking with, she made the introduction.   Had a nice chat with him about his upcoming opening and offered congrats.  He then proceeded to "convince" me and my friend to join the on-going rehersal of the Exhibition which will open on January 29th.  I said "Where" he said "down there" I said "Where" he said "take the elevator down to the rotunda, and look for the children " I looked at him knowing I was supposed to have "an experience" as i had read the PR in the NYT.  We shook hands and I thought WTF is going on in here.. what was I supposed to do, participate somehow? However, I was getting dizzy and on the edge of Vertigo from those pure while walls that seemed to be swirling around me - strange energy indeed.  I  then happened to look over the railing down to the floor of the rotunda and saw  a " Choreography/Action" taking place...

Knowing that I was committed to being  "involved" we arrived at the first ramp and was greeted by a child performer who asked me what "PROGRESS" meant to me... we walked and talked, until another performer met us with a new question about other countries and art (more walking UP) met by another performer with another interaction about Technology (more walking UP) met by another performer and another discussion a little more confrontational (more walking UP) and so it continued with different performers, more interactions until we reached the top ramp (walking ALL the way UP) then it was over - no one said it was over, we had to ask - got an affirmative "nod" and the performer disappeared...Press Release details

 It is 5 hours later and I am still having an "experience" and a bad headache from the stark WHITE WALL S,  the emptiness of the museum, and the effects the magnificent architecture had on my mind and body, but that's for another post...

It was great fun attending the book launch "SEEING OUT LOUDER"  for NY Magazine Senior Art Critic, Jerry Saltz last week, not only because I showed up to support Jerry, who I have known since back in the day, also to meet with others who wanted to meet in person the Facebook  "friends" with whom we have been having many lively art world discussions on Jerry's Page.  I never did get to purchase my book or have it personally signed as they were all sold out by the time I reached the front of a very long line.  However, I did meet my " FB friends" some of them are now friends...

Jerry Saltz's  book launch is included at the end of this video (below) which features the exhibition at Pace Gallery of David Hockney's paintings done in Yorkshire, England.  This is Hockney's first show in 12 years and it is located in the Chelsea gallery on West 25th Street, as well as in the UES gallery, in NYC, NY

I truly enjoyed viewing the David Hockney Exhibition at Pace Gallery in Chelsea.  These painting use the tried and true color pallet that he has made famous in various other works in the past.  One remarkable thing that I can add to my experience with these paintings is to reveal that I had thought that the colors were imaginary until I happened to be watching an English made movie called "Happy Go Lucky" 

which had a long landscape shot of a woman walking through the country side.  There it was, YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND  in living HOCKNEY COLOR...wonderous!

JAMES TURELL exhibition in Chelsea was a blast!

I know that holograms have been around for quite some time, however, this installation at Pace Gallery is exceptional.  It was experiential, visual and emotional.  I saw it, felt it and wanted to touch it.  Of course, the illusion was complete...COLOR!

I found it exciting, all those many black picture frames, lining the walls...

and behold, take a little step or a big step, or walk fast or slow past them, and color, shapes and vibrations engulfs one in visual wonderland.

WHAT was more interesting was not HIGH on the walls of the gallery, but what was  LOW on the sidewalk "OUTSIDE"... Artist Wayne Coe's "Sand Painting" introducing the event of WILEY'S photography Exhibition.  Ornately executed in black gun powder and white sand particles this treasure of visual and aesthetic expertise was the unexpected and delightful artwork surprise "happening" seen that entire evening in SOHO...

So many Art Openings tonight that I can't begin to understand why they are not scattered as they have been previously?  Maybe it has something to do with the "it's the economy stupid" frame of mind.  More advertising is encouraged when less product is being moved...

For me, I am starting out early and see how far I get...

I have a personal clip art gallery that I covet and I am sharing my expertise in choice with this offering today...

All I can say about this wonderful public art sculpture is...I WANT ONE IN NYC! Our skyscrapers deserve it... Our locals deserve it... Our commuters deserve it...Our tourists deserve it. They do...I DO!

Perhaps we could have a few, a bit smaller, placed on the Park Avenue Islands instead of the tulips for our Spring Lift-Up. NYC needs more Public Art. If I had my wish ... I personally, would want it downtown as the memorial for 911...If we could have this sculpture, where would you imagine it ?

Delightful and dreamlike this new addition to the SoHo Art Walls Scene which was monopolized by the KEITH HARRING reconstruction art wall not too very long ago, is this new mural as featured in the NEW YORK TIMES article...art critic Roberta Smith writes: "With their first public artwork in Manhattan, which went up at the northwest corner of Houston Street and the Bowery on July 17, the Brazilian brothers Otavio and Gustavo Pandolfo, who call themselves Os Gêmeos, bring graffiti art to its Rococo phase." I hope you enjoy it as much as I did?

"WHOLE IN THE WALL"

Exhibition on view of "street art" that I attended and fully enjoyed seeing the work that was familiar to me for many years downtown in Soho to name one of the neighborhood's scattered with this type of artwork. Not legitimate (art) at the time, but always exciting when spotted out of the corner of your eye like a surprise birthday present waiting to be unwrapped. One just had to examine the contents and give the artist a big virtual KISS!

GUSTON - OH MY, BIG GUY...

When I first saw the change in Guston's paintings from the lyrical, heavily  double and tripple loaded pallet knife strokes of exquisite color abstract compositions, I almost cried out loud.  I never understood exactly what was happening.  Perhaps his  close relationship with deKooning influenced his decision and out frustration that he could not compete, or did not choose to,  he needed to break away and do something entirely off the wall...something to distinquish his work and feed his ego.  This breakthough decision paved the way for no longer emerging artists, Kenny Scharf and Carol Ludlum

One of the series  of "Smokers" is now in the Whitney's permanent collection at last, where it belongs!

Yayoi Kusama's eightieth year, Gagosian Gallery is presenting exhibitions of her recent work in New York of the renowned doyenne of the international art world.

"For this two-part exhibition, which has been several years in the making, Kusama has conceived some astonishing new works, such as Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity (2009), a mesmerizing "infinity room" that operates on a system of simple yet ingenious optical devices. In a dark void, a delicate, shimmering mirage unfolds around the viewer, a myriad of gleaming lights that reproduce and reflect endlessly upon each other in golden silence" The video below was shot quickly inside the Infinity Room. The experience was overwhelming! I wanted to stay in there for a very, very long time...

Now, you tell me...

All of the hype about "Is it Art?"

... after viewing this exhibition of Lisa Yuskavage at Zwirner it was difficult to say? My own feelings are prejudiced because I abhor women being objectified, however, on the other hand, the artist really knows her craft and paints like a Flemish angel. Yes, there is a niche for this work, and the billionaire Steve Cohen, who is exhibiting part of his fabulous collection "The Women" at Sotheby's has "ONE"! Albeit, a conservative piece at that, but non the less erotic. However, the only cartoon-y reference on his piece, NIGHT 1999-2000, is the face and the ass, or should I say "cheek-y".

LIKE I SAID...this woman can paint...and let's hope that after she has played out her fame-game, she will do just that? I doubt it though, after seeing what she looks and sounds like, she is this business for the long haul, laughing all the way to the bank...

MUSIC ... ART... FASHION... EXCITEMENT!

This is a wonderful organization for which I volunteer as much as possible to help out on their events. I enjoy taking on the responsibility of greeting and checking in pre-paid guests and collecting $ at the door for last minute enthusiasts! This was a fundraiser for the non-profit organization, Art for Progress. Every year they have a Contest for their artist membership to compete for prizes. They conduct an on-line vote for the "finalists" and have an event for them to show their work. The guests are asked to vote at that time by paper ballot, collected at the event, counted, then the announcement of the "Winners" are posted on their website at http://artforprogress.org

THE VIDEO KING has a new exhibition at Metro Pictures. Artist, Tony Oursler had done it again. To my delight and fascination, the new show is fabulous. I was fortunate to see his very first show, and remember that I was shocked to see these little faces peering out from various vessels and talking to me. I was enchanted and awed. I asked, who is this guy, and what is he trying to tell me. In my amusement I found that the artist did communicate with me on every piece in that show, and I never stopped telling others about his work. That was over 15 years ago...His work is even more refined and a certainly spectacular in this exhibition of new work.

CINDY SHERMAN -Portrait of a Lady

CINDY SHERMAN recent exhibition at Metro Pictures was a complete surprise especially when I noticed that 2 of the people in the NYC Gallery Walks/Chelsea  more than resembled would-be-relatives of the "Ladies of a Certain Age" which is what I call the theme of this show.

Actually, her genre this time depicted "mature women" (gender specific work) of all types...cultural, economic, geographic and spiritual persuasions. However, there was another layer showing the evolution, either by choice or by circumstances,  to emphasize the emotional and/or personality differences that exists between these very large portraits.  Size matters...

For me, it was a statement of feminism redux!  Reality vs Hope..  of a life lived by women "with" those hard fought for entitlements.  As I walked the exhibit, it was evident that SHERMAN had captured the enigma of choice in her set-ups in the composition of this work... 

The portraits reflect a primal visibility, at last, of that intriguing inner life lived  and exposed... by generation, facial expressions and explicit fashion drag.

FALL ART SEASON - Chelsea

"Artists Making Photographs" at the Whitney opening today Friday, January 16th...I seem to be getting more interested in looking at photographs lately also portraits since I went to MOMA to see Marlene Dumas' Exhibition,  "Measuring Your Grave".  A friend artist, Amy who has a studio in Greenpoint asked me to model for her.  She is a portrait-artist and needs new inspiration. I know that DUMAS used photographs for content, but AMY is determined to draw and paint from life.  So be it...I get to do a little artwork myself by accomodating her.

I was wondering if portraiture is making a comeback?

Many Artist Opening Receptions Tonite...

I'm going to tag along with my friend Elizabeth from MeetUp's Art Travelers Group, but I don't know how long I will last...so crowded, but a lively crowd to be sure.  I know that most of the 30-ish people go ONLY to socialize, but I'm grateful to see them down there at all...considering that "they would rather be shopping" ! I eally get a kick out of the "art & fashion" debacle that always ensues...still cracks me up even tho I know that I've seen most every combination of clothing as well as couples. Some of the outfits are works of art themselves...  LOVE IT!

On Saturday I will be on line in the early AM along with 100's of others at the Metro Pictures Gallery awaiting my turn to try my luck at choosing one of 1800 "Postcards from the Edge" exhibition to benefit Visual AIDS at a blind  showcase of artists'  postcard artwork for ONLY $75 a pop.  Wonder what I'll end up with when I test my collectors "eye" if I'll be in or out of the $$$. I'll be sure to comment on my "find" next time...

I LOVE SATURDAYS! "Art is like grand music, an eternal act of generosity..."

We had quite a crowd combining meetups this Saturday, October 11 at 2PM, the NYC "Art Gallery Walks http://MeetUp.com/NYCArtGalleryWalks with the (more photos, here)http://singles.meetup.com/2583/ in Chelsea.  A great deal to view this week, including "paintings that were made to look like photographs, framed under glass, and "photos that were made to look like paintings", lavishly lit and highlighted in the photo-realism style.  Being diminished by observing the "HUGE" portraits by artist, Victor Rodrigues at the Ramis Barquet Gallery, was for some, a confrontation to their sensibilities.  It was a fab experience having our perception challenged once again, and enjoying the feedback, critique, and lively conversation that insued from all the other exhibitions that we visited as well...GoGo, Mike Weiss, Luhring Augustine, Stux Gallery, Mary Boone, Metro Pictures (WOW).

Once again, we were fortunate to be welcomed as guests, and have the Artists from the Lohin-Geduld Gallery, www.lohin-geduld.com join with us for a Q & A Session to discuss their work on view, at great length. The group members provided intelligent feedback that impressed the gallery director.  I chatted with her about my intention to demystify the artworld for the new or beginning collector by volunteering my time and expertise doing these gallery tours on Saturdays.

Refreshed by some wine and/or water served at the gallery we continued the adventure and then concluded the tour at an Artist Opening Reception at the Dillon Gallery delighted to feast our eyes and sit down on the benches and rest (always a guilty pleasure at a gallery) while meditating and merging with those wonderful painterly large realistic canvases depicting calm and PEACE.  At last, safe in familar territory refreshed and restored!  And then... and then?  A group of us "Art Enthusiasts" had a great dinner in the 'hood...

Good Morning,

I am starting my "art gallery walks" this Saturday, September 13th in Chelsea, The NYC "Art Gallery Walks" through MEETUP.com for the FALL Art Season.  I volunteer my time and my expertise in the art world, for the past 20 years, to especially expose, cultivate, and include, the new and beginning collector to the demystification of the creative process and perhaps encourage them to contemplate including art in there lifestyles.  I have a dual purpose, I can scout the field for New Talent for my clients for my profession, Private Art Consulting and Art Advisory...HELENE FORBES FINE ART.

As I had a very successful SPRING season enjoying the fantastic art work and installations that we all experienced, ( I am posting some pix) I was encouraged to continue to take this approach and casual format again for what appears to be, from my brief scan of the exhibitions, quite lively!  Sooooooooooo...all I can say is "ART is like Grand Music, an eternal act of generosity..."
