JERRY SALTZ BOOK LAUNCH AT X-

http://ArtChick.blogspot.com

Jerry Saltz at X

It was great fun attending the book launch "SEEING OUT LOUDER"  for NY Magazine Senior Art Critic, Jerry Saltz last week, not only because I showed up to support Jerry, who I have known since back in the day, also to meet with others who wanted to meet in person the Facebook  "friends" with whom we have been having many lively art world discussions on Jerry's Page.  I never did get to purchase my book or have it personally signed as they were all sold out by the time I reached the front of a very long line.  However, I did meet my " FB friends" some of them are now friends...

Jerry Saltz's  book launch is included at the end of this video (below) which features the exhibition at Pace Gallery of David Hockney's paintings done in Yorkshire, England.  This is Hockney's first show in 12 years and it is located in the Chelsea gallery on West 25th Street, as well as in the UES gallery, in NYC, NY

I truly enjoyed viewing the David Hockney Exhibition at Pace Gallery in Chelsea.  These painting use the tried and true color pallet that he has made famous in various other works in the past.  One remarkable thing that I can add to my experience with these paintings is to reveal that I had thought that the colors were imaginary until I happened to be watching an English made movie called "Happy Go Lucky"
which had a long landscape shot of a woman walking through the country side.  There it was, YORKSHIRE, ENGLAND  in living HOCKNEY COLOR...wonderous!

I have always liked the man more than the work (and that has upset me as I REALLY like the man!) however with the new landscape work I think he has found a subject to inspire and run with. And you're right about the colour. But interestingly when you raise this issue it puts the subject of Hockney as a colourist on the map... and when you look at the pool paintings again you realise that that is exactly where his strength really lies. I've previously considered him as primarily being interested in line - I think I was wrong! Long may Hockney continue. He's also a stalwart of the smoking art fraternity... champion bloke!

Thank you Guy, for your confirmation of my feeling about Hockney as a colorist. I enjoyed viewing your blog and I think your work is spectacular. Please keep in touch with us here in NYC and perhaps if you will be showing here, you will inform me of the dates.

Strangely enough plans are afoot for a couple of shows in Brooklyn in the future. I'll keep you up to date!

Haven't looked at Hockney for a long time and was surprised how different it look. Wouldn't have know it was him if his name wasn't mention. Thanks for posting
